Hutton Roof and Pear Tree Cottage Meet at Plain Quarry car park, SD 552 761, which is just to the east of Burton-in-Kendal. Stout footwear and packed lunch needed. Hutton Roof has been a favourite of the BPS for many years. This time we have the opportunity of seeing the long lost Polystichum lonchitis (last seen in 1957!) and meeting its finder, Bryan Yorke. Meet at the car park on Windermere Road, Grange-over-Sands at 10.30am. (Turn right at the mini roundabout in front of the Toyota garage) There might be some free parking in layby just after the last house on the right. We will explore Eggerslack Woods before going on to Hampsfell. Last time we were there we avoided the limestone pavements because of rain. Hopefully we can explore them on this day. Meet at Bull Pot Farm (SD6628 8145) at 10.30am. This is approached by a narrow lane to the west of Casterton. Follow signs to Branthwaite Nursery and keep going. This SSSI has been visited twice in the past by the BPS and 20 taxa have been found. We walk over moorland down to Ease Gill and explore its magnificent scenery. This gill is normally dry in Summer. There is good parking at Forge Bridge at GR SD148995. The wood is not easy under foot, being wet and mossy with scattered crags but has a good range of ferns including the two Filmy Ferns (Hymenophyllum tunbrigense and H. wilsonii) growing together and Hay-scented Buckler Fern (Dryopteris aemula) at one of its few Cumbrian sites. On the A683 about 4 miles NE of Sedbergh, next to the Cross Keys Inn. SD 698 969. The parking area is not that large and can be busy, so please car share where possible. Map: Explorer OL19 Howgill Fells. It's a steep climb up Cautley Spout but there is a good stone-flagged path.
