Corndon Hill

July 23, 2014
Corndon Hill, Shrewsbury, Powys SY5 United Kingdom + Google Map

A field outing to Corndon Hill, Radnorshire, about 5 miles north of Bishops Castle Situated in the extreme east of the former county of Radnorshire, Corndon hill is known as a site for a number of uncommon plants, including several ferns not usually seen in the area. Long standing members of the BPS may recall a visit there back in 1985 (The Bulletin Vol3 No2). We visited rather more recently and found a good range of mountain ferns including Cryptogramma…

August 30, 2014
Tregaron, Ceredigion United Kingdom + Google Map

Visit to Tim Brocks garden and its environs, Tregaron, Ceredigion Many Regional Group members will have met Tim as, since moving to South Wales from Hampshire two years ago, he has joined us on several meetings. An important part of his move was to bring with him his National Collection of Asplenium scolopendrium cultivars which we will be able to enjoy on our visit. It was reading an article by Tim in the 2009 edition of Pteridologist describing his collection,…

Lower Hopton Farm, Stoke Lacy HR7 4HX United Kingdom + Google Map

We are very grateful to two BPS members who have allowed us to visit their gardens in Herefordshire. Both are interested in much more than just ferns, so a fascinating day is in store. In the morning we will go to the garden of Veronica Cross at Stoke Lacy near Bromyard. Veronica will be well known to many members as a keen plantswoman who has been collecting ferns for many years and the opportunity to visit her garden is not…

Picton Castle, Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire SA62 4AS United Kingdom + Google Map

Visit to Picton Castle Gardens in Pembrokeshire, with indoor meeting. For our final visit of the year we are going to the far south west of our range to visit a fern garden in balmy Pembrokeshire. There are ferns throughout this large and varied garden, but they are particularly notable in the wooded areas, where there are British natives and exotic species including tree ferns, and in the fernery in an old walled garden. We’re very grateful to Roddy Milne,…

South Wales & Borders Group: Dinas Powis and Dyffryn Gardens

September 22, 2016 @ 10:30 am - 5:00 pm
Dinas Powis, Vale of Glamorgan, CF64 4DA + Google Map

Polypodies in Dinas Powis and Victorian style fernery at Dyffryn Gardens, Glamorgan The national society visited the Polypodies of Dinas Powis way back in 1990, when they saw all three species and even managed to spy plants of the cultivar P. australe ‘Richard Kayes’, which was first recorded from this location even further back in 1668. The latter required binoculars then and it would be fantastic if we could confirm its continued presence after over 300 years. However, if that…
