M: Todmorden and Patmos Gardens

June 18 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm

Leader James Richardson
In the footsteps of the Stansfields.
Abraham Stansfield started a fern nursery in Todmorden (1841) before moving it to Sale. His grandson, Fredrick Stansfield, became the first president of the BPS (1891).
In 2017 Todmorden in Bloom planned and planted a fernery in the centre of Todmorden to commemorate the town’s historical association with ferns. Alison Evans joined Todmorden in Bloom for a day to help plant the fernery. It has lost several ferns originally planted and this year we are trying to re-establish it. This meeting will include a visit to the fernery; all advice and donations will be gratefully received.

We will start with visiting some Asplenium species growing along the canal. We will then head to a north-facing wall on the canal to see how many species we can find growing on it. Next, we will head around the corner to the graveyard of the Unitarian Church. Then we will cross over the road and into the back of Centre Vale Park, where Abraham Stansfield first became a market gardener and then worked as a nurseryman. After exploring the woodlands in Centre Vale Park we will have lunch (there are plenty of shelters in the park in the event of bad weather), there is also a café nearby for those that want to buy a hot drink or a sandwich (or sit inside the café for a meal). After lunch we will head to Patmos Gardens and the fernery. Patmos Gardens is next to Wellington Road, the site of Abraham’s Vale Nurseries (although there is no evidence today of where it might have been). Weather depending, we can then head back to the cars, or we can walk steeply out of Todmorden to explore more woodlands.

Meet at Lever Street Car Park, Todmorden (SD 93792 24116) at 10:30 – Pay and Display https://tinyurl.com/mw36mskw (10 minutes’ walk from Todmorden Train Station along the canal).

Important note
For field meetings members must abide by the BPS Code of Conduct BPS-Code-of-Coduct-Jan-2020.pdf (ebps.org.uk) and BPS-Safety-Code-Jan-2020.pdf (ebps.org.uk) – the Safety Code which covers responsibilities, clothing and equipment etc. but for avoidance of doubt members must bring adequate warm and waterproof clothing, walking boots and sufficient food and drink for field trips unless otherwise indicated.
