M: Tour and workday at Manchester University Botanical Grounds ‘The Firs’

May 19 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm

The aim is to have a site tour to see some glasshouse ferns, cacti and succulents etc. in ‘The Range’ and then to look at the filmy ferns in the Moss House where you’ll see some spectacular Killarney Fern doing its best. Then we’ll help site manager Oliver Hughes with some tasks outdoors where there’s a fern bed dedicated to former BPS member, the late Barbara Porter, (see Yvonne Golding’s article in the 2013 Pteridologist p. 429 for a preview). Garden implements and gloves will be provided. Any members’ donations of spare ferns will be welcome. Please email me if you are planning to attend as we’ll need likely numbers. Bring a packed lunch and there are toilets on site.

Directions. The Firs (officially the Firs Environmental Research Station) is located in Fallowfield, on Whitworth Lane M14 6HE. Whitworth Lane is behind Owens Park, close to the Armitage Sports Centre and the former Chancellors Hotel. Access to the site is easiest from Old Hall Lane. There is some limited parking space on the site or additionally on Gunnery Lane, however parking by the Armitage Sports Centre or at the former Chancellors Hotel, now Utley House, off Chancellors way should be possible. If the barrier is closed, ring the intercom and say you are visiting “the Botany site”. If you use a GPS, it will direct you to the closed Chancellors Hotel, which is adjacent to our site, but access is not obvious. The Firs entrance is on the corner of Whitworth Lane and Gunnery Lane.
