- This meeting has passed.
N: Eskdale, Cumbria
July 1 @ 12:00 pm - July 3 @ 5:00 pm
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATE HAS CHANGED from the preliminary notice due to a large music festival taking place in Eskdale. So our meeting will be held a week earlier, i.e.
1st – 3rd July 2022
The plan is to hold an afternoon meeting on Friday 1st for those who wish. Otherwise arrive Friday evening or Sat morning for a full day on Saturday 2nd. Then we meet Sunday morning to early afternoon, and finish. Hopefully we will see around 30 different fern species and allies.
Friday afternoon 1st July 1.30pm. Exploring Miterdale
Meet at the large parking area by the bridge NY1465 0118, reached by a narrow lane leaving the Eskdale valley road between Eskdale Green and Bowerhouse Bridge (not signposted), and passing a school. We’ll explore the dale up to near Miterdale Head and around Porterthwaite woodland. Approx. 5km.
Saturday morning 2nd July 10.30am. Stanley Ghyll
Meet at the carpark NY1713 0030, accessed by a narrow lane from the Eskdale valley road between Beckfoot and Dalegarth stations. We’ll follow paths up the Ghyll, a steep sided gorge with interesting ferns and a fantastic viewpoint, then paths around the River Esk and St Catherine’s Church. Approx. 3km.
Saturday afternoon 2nd July Irton Woods and Parkgate Tarn
Drive west along the Eskdale valley road past the Bowerhouse Inn and uphill to the southern shoulder of Irton Pike. Meet at the roadside carpark approx. NY121 012. Timing will depend on when we leave Stanley Ghyll. We’ll take a circular route through mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland via Parkgate Tarn. There is a good wetland habitat with Osmunda, Dryopteris carthusiana etc. Approx. 3km.
Sunday morning 3rd July 10.30am. Milkingstead Wood
Meet at Forge Bridge SD149 995 with good parking in the adjacent layby. The wood is noted for its populations of both Hymenophyllum filmy ferns and Dryopteris aemula, etc. Approx. 2-3km with some pathless terrain to cover. There are other possible sites to visit if we finish early.
The Lakeland scenery in Eskdale is fantastic and let’s hope that the weather is also kind to us. However be prepared for adverse conditions with suitable warm clothing and waterproofs to hand. Walking boots are essential. Bring a packed lunch for both Saturday and Sunday.
Members intending to stay overnight will need to make their own accommodation arrangements. There is a good range of hotels, guest houses, holiday lets and camping to be found on internet sites such as ‘Eskdale Lake District Accommodation’ or ‘Eskdale Lake District Camping’. No doubt much of it will get booked up as the month progresses, so don’t leave it too late.
There are three pubs around Boot and two more further down Eskdale, all doing evening meals. We can meet up Friday evening in the Woolpack Inn NY190 010 (01946 723230, internet – woolpack inn eskdale). Their bar/cafe menu serves food 5-8.30pm and pizzas up to 10pm Friday and 9pm Saturday. If I know who is definitely coming in advance I can hopefully reserve a table for us.
