- This meeting has passed.
July 6, 2018 @ 9:30 am - July 8, 2018 @ 5:00 pm
The meeting will be based in Mountsorrel, a small town on the old A6 road between Leicester and Loughborough, and on the Soar Navigation (river and canal (River Trent to Leicester)). Nearby is the Great Central Railway heritage line.
Mainline trains run frequently to Loughborough (better than Leicester) (two per hour, although not evenly spaced). There is a shuttle bus (Sprint) from Loughborough station to the centre of Loughborough, and then a bus service (Arriva 126 or 127) every 15 minutes to Leicester via Mountsorrel. Alternatively, a local stopping train runs between Leicester and Loughborough via the nearest station, Sileby, This is a mile and a half from Mountsorrel, but there is no direct bus between the two.
Participants are recommended to stay at The Riverbank B&B in Mountsorrel (see below), which is just across the road from The Waterside Inn, where we will assemble on the first evening (Friday). There are other hotels nearby (details below).
Draft outline programme (venues and times may change)
Friday July 6th
Meet in The Waterside Inn, Sileby Road, Mountsorrel (Tel 0116 230 2758)
We may walk in the evening along the canal, or on the “mount” of Mountsorrel.
Saturday July 7th
9.30: Meet at Mountsorrel and drive (car share) to The Brand, Woodhouse Eaves.
This is the home of Colonel Robert Martin, and contains a large semi-wild garden. Ken Trewren has visited here and found all 3 Dryopteris affinis species, with hybrids. The garden itself is of considerable interest.
A packed lunch will probably be recommended, but we may lunch at the Copt Oak PH.
1400-1430: Grace Dieu Priory and Wood
This is a rare example of carboniferous limestone for Leicestershire, and contains a range of lime-loving ferns as well as the rarity, Equisetum hyemale.
If time permits, we will visit a wall site, where Asplenium ceterach grows, and maybe other sites.
19:00 for 19:30: Evening meal at the Griffin Inn, Swithland (01509 890535).
Sunday July 8th
10.00 Visit to a further site (to be confirmed) or possibly to Clumber Park, where a fernery is being built – may not be ready.
Packed lunch or PH local to the site
1430: Visit to a community garden in Nottingham, where a fern garden has recently been established. Tea will be provided here for us.
The meeting should finish c. 4 to 4.30p.m.
