N: Llangollen, Wales

September 14, 2019 - September 15, 2019

This meeting will be based in Llangollen, North Wales.
Although in North Wales, it’s near the border, and has easy access from Chester, and Manchester and the West Midlands. It is a small town, with fantastically beautiful scenery, and the centre for the Llangollen canal and Froncsyllte aqueduct World Heritage Site. As it is justifiably very popular, early booking is essential, especially since there is a railway gala on the Llangollen steam railway that weekend.

Draft programme (subject to change, and order may be reversed depending on the weather)

Friday evening September 13th 07:30

Meet for a meal, probably at the Cambrian House Hotel – under new ownership and restaurant not open yet, but which is in the centre of Llangollen.

Saturday September 14th 09:30

Meet at Abbey Grange hotel. This is 1.5 miles out of Llangollen on the Horseshoe Pass road, but has a large car park.
Short drive to visit woods around Chirk castle. There is the opportunity to see the Froncsyllte aqueduct (World Heritage site).
Light lunch and tea is available at Chirk castle (NT). NT members should bring their membership cards, as the main café is in the castle.
Evening meal at Abbey Grange hotel

Sunday September 15th 10:00

Assemble at Abbey Grange hotel and pool cars as far as possible.
Explore the spectacular limestone Eglwyseg mountain for limestone specialities including Dryopteris submontana.
The terrain is moderately challenging, and there are some exposed slopes (although the path is good).
We can take a packed lunch (obtain from the bakery in Castle Street, Llangollen, or the Valle Crucis mobile home park), depending on the weather, or a late light lunch can be obtained at the Valle Crucis Abbey camp-site. Only a carvery is available on Sunday at Abbey Grange, and we will probably be late anyway.
We will then return to Llangollen to explore ferns along the canal towards the famous Horseshoe Falls (not a spectacular cascade but a device to feed the Llangollen canal). Tea is readily available in Llangollen for those who do not have to depart early.

The Llangollen tourist Information Office has a good list on their web-site of accommodation in and
around the town. It is particularly strong on self-catering accommodation. It also lists camp-sites, although none are very close to Llangollen
