NW: Churchtown Botanic Gardens Fernery
June 29, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm
Churchtown Botanic Gardens Fernery, Botanic Road, Southport, PR9 7NE
and Michael Hayward’s garden L23 8TQ
The Fernery in Churchtown is a Grade II listed Victorian building, first opened in 1876. During 2018, a major replanting exercise was undertaken following a large donation of rare ferns from the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh.
By car – the postcode takes you to the front gate of the park, where there is often roadside parking. Otherwise, further north along Botanic Road turn left on Verulam Road, and the Botanic Gardens car park is on your left, after a couple of bends.
By rail and bus – Southport Railway Station is close to Lord Street. From Lord Street take a Stagecoach bus No. 2 or X2 towards Crossens and Preston. Alight at Marshside Road. Turn right at the junction and walk along Cambridge Road, then left at the roundabout. Continue along Cambridge Road until you see the Hesketh Arms on your left, then the gate to the Botanic Gardens is a little further on your left. The Fernery is beyond the cafe and plant sales area.
After lunch we will move on to Michael Hayward’s garden 6 Far Moss Road, Blundellsands, Liverpool, L23 8TQ. There is on-street parking. Let Alison Evans know if you will need a lift from the Fernery (and back!) and we will try to arrange it. Michael has a collection of rare ferns, including Todea barbara and Lophosoria quadripinnata growing outside.
Packed lunch or use the Botanic Gardens cafe.
Leaders: Alison Evans and Michael Hayward.
