NW: Great Asby Scar
August 21 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Leader: Trevor Lowis
This meeting has been rescheduled to 21 August.
Meet at 10am – park at NY 6318 1071. This is the junction of a small quarry/track on the B6260 one mile north of Orton village.
Our walk will take us along a track through some areas of damaged pavement to gain access to the Great Asby Scar NNR, an area displaying some of the finest examples of undamaged limestone pavement in Britain.
We will be looking in particular at the limestone specialists, Northern Buckler Fern (Dryopteris submontana), Limestone Fern (Gymnocarpium robertianum), Brittle Bladder Fern (Cystopteris fragilis), Green Spleenwort (Asplenium viride) and Wall-rue (Asplenium ruta-muraria). And most especially we will be on the lookout for Holly Fern (Polystichum lonchitis) for which there is only one recently discovered record on the Great Asby pavements.
It is about 5km to reach the known Holly Fern site over fairly level, although sometimes uneven ground. Trevor will produce some maps and possible escape routes for those not wishing to make the full trek. There will be lots of interesting things to see on the way (including many vascular plants as well)!
Bring a packed lunch.
Please let me or Trevor know in advance if you are coming so we have an idea of who to expect.
