NW: Wasdale: Lycopodiella monitoring + Irton Woods
July 11, 2021 @ 10:30 am - 4:30 pm
In the morning we will be carrying out a monitoring survey of the Lycopdiella inundata (Marsh Clubmoss) population in Wasdale. Meet at 10.30am at the road junction overlooking Wastwater, NY15110540. There is parking for several cars but this spot is popular and likely to be quite crowded, so some people may need to park a bit further away and we can give you a lift from there if necessary (call my mobile if stuck)! In the afternoon we will visit to Irton Woods, where the main draw is a recently discovered population of Osmunda regalis (Royal Fern). We have been given permission to park by the track at Parkgate Farm, around NY 1122 0020, but I will need to be there first to show everyone where to park. From there it’s a gentle stroll through the woods. Time allowing, on the way we could visit the Pilularia globulifera (Pillwort) site at Flass Tarn to see how it’s faring, and there are a couple of other interesting things to stop off and see en route.
Bring a packed lunch, or if preferred there are hostelries not far away (en route to the afternoon’s walk) at eg Nether Wasdale or Santon Bridge.
