S: Extra fern outing, Arthur’s Seat
May 25 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
At short notice, we are planning an extra fern outing, on Wednesday evening next week (25 May); a gentle stroll in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh.
We hope to see several interesting things:
– Adder’s-tongue fern (Ophioglossum vulgatum). Not at all rare, but not often seen!
– at least three different horse tails (including Equisetum fluviatile and E. palustre),
– Forked spleenwort (Asplenium septentrionale). This is a rare fern: it occurs on two different hills in Edinburgh, but nowhere else within about 50 miles, and in only 10 other tetrads (10km squares) across Scotland. (It is even rarer in England.)
– it is also possible that we will find Asplenium x murbeckii, the (extremely) rare hybrid of Asplenium septentrionale and Asplenium ruta-muraria.
– and there are other species we will come across.
If you are in the Edinburgh area, and have not seen these ferns before, this should be interesting. And even if you know these ferns, it might still be a pleasant outing!
We will meet at 5pm, in the carpark near Holyrood Palace. (If you want to join us a little later, I can tell you where we will be.) Please let me know if you are interested, or would like more information.
