S: Loch Brandy in Glen Clova
June 22, 2019
Loch Brandy, Glen Clova. Leader Steve Munyard
Meet at 11:00 am, at the Car park at NO 326731 (shown on the OS Explorer map)
The walk from the parking area is about 1.5 miles across rough ground and tussock grass. We will take a packed lunch. Stout footwear and waterproofs are recommended.
The site was mentioned in The Flora of Forfarshire 1848 (William Gardiner). He noted the large Polystichum lonchitis plants.
I visited the area about 30 years ago and indeed there were many large Polystichums. This was my first site for Botrychium lunaria, which occurs frequently on damp rock ledges; with current interest in Botrichium, further investigation of these plants will be useful. A number of unusual orchids were also seen. There is also an old record for Polystichum x lonchitiforme (the hybrid of P. lonchitis and P. setiferum) in the area, so there is always a possibility of finding this. Lime-loving fern species and many birds of prey occur in the area.
All are welcome. Please let us know if you would like to come.
