August 10, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Joint meeting with the Kent Botanical Recording Group
Leader: Alfie Gay
A meeting to add to our fern records and also give members a chance to see Osmunda regalis (Royal fern) at a site which probably has the best claim out of all the sites in Kent of being a native one. Alfie’s discovery of it at the northern edge of Longrope Wood in 2017 was of particular interest as there is a 1950’s Francis Rose record from Orlestone. We’ll look for missing fern species, Dryopteris affinis (Golden-scaled Male-fern), D. carthusiana (Narrow Buckler-fern), Polystichum aculeatum (Hard Shield-fern and P. setiferum (Soft Shield fern) and with the expertise of BPS members improve our fern identification and maybe even find some hybrids
DISTANCE: 2-3 miles. MEET: at TQ986 348 in Orlestone Forest Forestry Commission car park. The car park entrance is on the west side of Malthouse Lane, about 100 yards south of its junction with Birchett Lane. (Postcode: TN26 2EL.)
