South Wales & Borders – Exploration of the Olchen Valley, Herefordshire

June 11, 2015 @ 10:30 am - 5:00 pm

The first meeting of 2015 will be a fairly strenuous visit to the Olchen Valley in
Herefordshire, starting at the base of the Cat’s Back ridge, descending to the valley
floor, climbing up the length of the valley to the ridge above Hay Bluff, before
returning to the start along the Cat’s Back ridge itself. This is a round trip of over 6
miles with around 300 metres of climbing, and with optional scrambling
(recommended if you wish to see the best ferns) on top.
On a visit last year we saw 16 species, including Cystopteris fragilis, Gymnocarpium
dryopteris
, Phegopteris connectilis and Asplenium viride. There have also been reports
of clubmosses, so perhaps we will find more with a larger group.
We will meet at 10:30 at the car park at the base of the Cat’s Back (SO288 328, OS
Explorer map OL13, North Sheet). Stout footwear and suitable protection from sun or
rain as appropriate are advised. A packed lunch is essential.

    1. Hi Michael,

Yes, it is a single day event on 11th June, although it will be quite a long day, depending on how much exploring we do. The site is very close to the Red and Black Darrens we visited on the Brecon weekend.

You would be very welcome to come along if you wished – just let us know and we’ll add you to those we send an update to in a week or so.

      Best Wishes,

      Sue
