South Wales & Borders Group: Castles and Woods of Monmouthsire.
July 14, 2016 @ 10:30 am - 5:00 pm
For our July meeting we will be exploring the Asplenium trichomanes subspecies on various
castles in Monmouthshire. In 2015 we visited many of these with Roger Golding looking for
Asplenium trichomanes subsp quadrivalens (the common subspecies), subsp pachyrachis and
their hybrid A. x staufleri. We hope to visit the two castles with the most interesting forms –
Caldicot and Cas Troggy, but have not yet arranged access to the latter as it has recently
changed hands. By way of contrast, we will also visit a wooded local nature reserve at Penhow
Woods (http://www.first-nature.com/waleswildlife/e-nnr-penhow.php ). No rarities here, but a
good range of British natives and, who knows, perhaps a few cultivars?
Meeting at 10.30 in the car park for Caldicot Castle (ST486 884). Best to have solid footwear
and some protection from bad weather if necessary. We hope to arrange a pub lunch, but
participants may bring a packed lunch if they prefer.
