South Wales & Borders Group: Exploration of the Nedd Valley, Powis.
August 11, 2016 @ 10:30 am - 5:00 pm
Our August meeting will be a visit to the waterfalls lands of the Brecon Beacons. We will be
exploring one of the rivers which cuts through this limestone region, the river Nedd. In our
recent visit, we found one of the British Hymenophyllum species there, but both are recorded
on the BSBI website, along with Dryopteris aemula and other wet woodland species. With a
larger group, we may well find some interesting things, as well as seeing some lovely
waterfalls.
To see the best ferns we may have to walk up the river floor. If the weather has been dry, the
Nedd usually disappears underground by mid-summer. If the weather has been wet, however, it
could be fairly full. Please bring wellingtons if this is likely to be the case.
We will meet at 10:30 at the car park on a minor road which crosses the Nedd around 5 miles
north of Pontneddfechan (SN908 105). As well as wellingtons, stout footwear and suitable
protection from sun or rain as appropriate are advised. Please bring a packed lunch to allow for
flexibility on the day.
