Scottish Group – Stob Coire Sgriodain
August 30, 2014
Stob Coire Sgriodain, West of Cairngorms; Clubmosses
Stob Coire Sgriodain, south of Fersit, Highland. This is one of the two sites for Lycopodium lagopus identified by Fred Rumsey in his Watsonia article in 2007. When I visited the area in 2012 I found it to be rich in clubmosses, including a few plants of Diphasiastrum x issleri, the first confirmed record from VC97, Westerness. One of the aims of this visit will be to try to locate more extensive populations of this. Hopefully we should see a few ferns as well!
Meet at 10.15am at the end of the public road just west of Fersit village: NN 350 781 (see map). There is a train station at Tulloch, about 5km away by road, and there is currently a train listed arriving 9.18am from the south (leaving very early from Edinburgh or Glasgow), return is at 6.08pm. I can organise a lift from the station if necessary.
Reasonable level of fitness required. The terrain is fairly rough and we will be ascending to around 1000m. Bring suitable clothing and packed lunch.
