WS: Taff Fechan and Morlais Castle
June 20 @ 10:30 am - 5:00 pm
Last June, on behalf of the BPS, we led a “ferny walk” for a journalist and photographer from Country Walking Magazine and we expect the resultant article to be published in 2019.
To show them plenty of woodland ferns we started along the Taff Fechan (little Taff) a tributary to the main river which we visited as a local group back in 2011. To this we added a climb to the nearby Morlais Castle which we knew would add an open limestone site with its contrasting ferns. As an unexpected bonus we found extensive colonies of Moonwort, Botrychium lunaria around the castle.
Our plan for this meeting is to revisit these sites, choosing the exact route on the day to maximise the range of ferns we can see. We will meet at grid reference SO 04411 09768 which is near Vaynor a couple of miles north of Merthyr Tydfil at 10.30am. There is roadside parking for quite a few cars just a few yards from a pub The Aberglais
We will need clothing suitable for the weather, some mud along the riverside, and the climb to the castle. Please bring a packed lunch.
