Y: Hack Falls Wood, Grewelthorpe

August 17 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

Meeting Place – Visit to Hackfall Wood, between Masham and Grewelthorpe. Meet at the carpark on the road between Masham and Grewelthorpe SE 23067 77485 (54.19280 x -1.64790). Once again parking is rather limited, so arriving by 10am is recommended (Plan A), with 10.30 as latest start time.
Going – Bit steep and slippery if wet (KT3).
Footwear – Boots
Food – Packed lunch which we should have at the most inland Yorkshire sandy beach.
Notes – This is one of the first meeting sites we visited in 1984 when our group formed, so, it is a nostalgic trip. More so for the less than youngsters. Always worth a visit with tufa springs is a good location for Polystichum species, including x bicknellii hybrid as well as other woodland ferns and horsetails (including stands of Equisetum telmateia) and the most amazingly spectacular blankets of Vandenboschia speciosum gametophyte. Apologies, two very small tufts und a rock. Part of the walk could include a narrow path above a steep slope that some members may not feel comfortable with but they could be directed along an alternative route to meet up at a point avoiding the dodgy bit.
