Y: Hack Falls Wood, Grewelthorpe

August 11 @ 10:30 am - 4:00 pm

This is a change from the advertised meeting at Lumley reservoir. David Tennant has found conditions there unsuitable and the water levels are being maintained too high over the area where it should be. This visit to Hack Falls will be a recce for the September visit that David can’t attend, but he will share his knowledge of the site at this meeting. If you also cannot go on the September meeting, this is your chance to visit Hack Falls.

Meet at the car-park on the road between Masham and Grewelthorpe
SE 23067 77485 (54.19280 x -1.64790). Parking is rather limited, so arriving early is recommended.
Going – Bit steep and slippery if wet (KT3).
Footwear – Boots
Food – Packed lunch which we should have at the most inland Yorkshire sandy beach.
Notes – This ancient woodland site with tufa springs is a good location for Polystichum species, including x bicknellii hybrid (and one place where the hybrid and both parents are next to each other, as well as other woodland ferns and horsetails (including stands of Equisetum telmateia) and the most amazingly spectacular blankets of Vandenboschia speciosum gametophyte. Apologies, Yorkshire humour. See Bulletins 2011 p.348 and 2004 p.217 for previous YFG meetings there. This area has follies and other ‘garden features’, we may even coincide with the hydraulically powered water fountain putting on its display.

Leaders – David Tennant, Bruce Brown, Barry Wright
