CraigiiDissectAthyrium filix-feminaHowardii & Craigii were both raised by Robert Craig in 1874. He was head gardener to Mrs. Howard at Levens Hall. They were both seedlings from a very good form of A.f.f. corymbiferum that was originally found in Guernsey. The original Craigii is unfortunately long lost but spore raised plants can exhibit similar characteristics.Generally as for species. Will grow in most soils but prefers acid conditions; as someone says in good 'woodland duff'. Also best in light shade but will tolerate some sun in the morning and evening, or more if in damp conditions. Protect from strong winds which would damage the fronds.Ian Unsworth
